I enjoyed reading this memoir of a single mother who moves from Minnesota to Hawaii (good choice, I'd say!), and works as a lab tech. Later she moves to Arizona to be near family, and works in a free-standing emergency center. There her job duties expand to working more often directly with doctors and patients, and she tells some interesting stories. Recommended.Product details

Conquering Challenges A Working Mother Story eBook Elizabeth Blake MT ASCP Reviews
When I was in High School I wanted to be a Nuclear Physicist. So, taking a senior trip to the Argonne Nuclear Lab outside Chicago from my native Michigan was incredible. However, when I saw the ring of Beagles in the lab, I felt like the little girl in Jurassic Park seeing the goat intended for the T Rex. They explained that they would turn on the reactor, and each "ring" around the core would be exposed, from insects to the poor dogs. They laughed at my observation that the Physicist's offices were in the last ring, but I was serious!
How many folks really wonder what their lives will be "like" in their occupation? This wonderful book is not intended for that purpose, and is more autobiographical, but I'm suggesting a wider use getting a fun page-turner, then getting the extra benefit of an "insider's" look at medical professions, from lab to the ER and beyond. I completely agree with all the reviews of this gem of a book from each of their frames, but also wanted to recommend it for anyone in, or considering a medical career, INCLUDING working moms!
Finally, the inspiration is outstanding, and you really feel good and motivated about human potential as you read. I thought about Klara and Laszlo Polgar trying to convince FIDE and the Hungarian government that girls should be allowed to compete in chess, and that home schooling works! Their belief in and commitment to human potential is another aspect of this wonderful read. Highly recommended. I bought it on to read a little each evening, but couldn't put it down! Author is a wonderfully gifted writer on top of all her other accomplishments and activities.
Excellent book
I found this book not very interesting and not well-written. It's not that it is poorly written as much as there is no real meat to it. It seems like just a shallow narrative to me. Details that would make it more interesting are lacking. I am only a third of the way through it and am struggling to finish. The lab scenarios are not nearly as exciting as they would be if her real passion for the job came through. Instead, I see a lot of griping and criticism for other medical professionals, e.g., RNs and residents. I surely wouldn't want to become a med tech from reading this book.
I enjoyed reading the daily obstacles and real-life situations of a med lab tech. As a med lab student, this biography gives me a lot to think about!
Very good telling of her life and career. I am also a Lab tech and there was so much I could relate to! I really enjoyed reading this as I am too a mother trying to balance work with home life.
I enjoyed Elizabeth's story of her life journey. I have worked in the Laboratory profession for 35 years and could relate to many of the experiences in the book. I would recommend this book to my colleagues, especially those who have worked in smaller, community based settings.
I also was a Medical Lab Technologist working closely with Emergency Department for 30 years. I also found it a positive experience and profession. Thank you for writing this for "us" and explaining
-----The job satisfaction of being part of a health care team, helping people in their time of need.
-----The emotional lows of stresses of emergency lab medicine.
-----The health risk/average pay
-----The mental stimulation/ interesting case studies
-----The stable job which creates a strong center by which one can tackle the good and bad's of one's life path
and even have "More Fun" than not.
